Have you thought about simply scanning them w/ a quality flatbed? I've been getting spectacular results w/ various sources (antiquarian books, prints, photos), which I use in my cultural and intellectual history courses. I don't know what is your final application, but if intend to go digital and any point, why introduce the extra variables?
