I thought the preferred method is the lacquer sticks available from Fargo
Ent. of CA (inVacaville or Fairfield).  They are available in a variety of
colors.  Just rub them on and wipe off the excess.  You do not want to wipe
too hard or you will wipe it out of the engravings.  I think they have a web
site of www.fargoenterprises.com or something like that.
