What conditions are you working on? If you reach the end of the exposure
range of the lens, the camera will adjust the shutter speed to keep you from
over exposing or under exposing your photo. For example, if the light
demands f/1.4 at 1/1000 sec., and you have your Vario Apo on, and the
shutter speed is set for 1/1000, then the camera will drop the shutter speed
to 1/250 to match the maximum aperture of 2.8.
