I recommend The Zone System for 35mm Photographers by Carson Graves.  ISBN 
D-240-80203-9  It is clearly written, with many photos showing what is going 
on.  It also has step by step instructions for running the necessary tests to 
calibrate your exposure and development system, and includes shortcuts for 
35mm photographers.
