If it says it is supposed to fix between 6-8 minutes for example what I do is
take half of 8...
I check the film in 4 minutes if it has not cleared I dump it, remix fresh fix
and then give it a nice about of time in that, :) after a quick rinse.
I recommend Rapid Fix with no solution B which you are definitely supposed to
not use with tab grain films anyway.

IF the film has cleared in 3 minutes I'd give it another 3.
I might start doing a two bath fixing thing like my friend Byron Rakitzis does.
I do the two bath for prints so why not negs it makes at least as much sense.
An economical way to know you have really got the job done right.
