Well, KPeters, that post came from someone who purchased a G1 system - and
then dumped it at a big loss and went back to Leica.

Yes, the glass is truly excellent. I don't have the bench tests to be able
to say the lenses are the equal of Leica lenses, but looking at the photos I
took with them, I'd say they are.

However - calling the camera a rangefinder is really a bit of an advertising
joke. It is no more a rangefinder than any of the Olympus stylus cameras, or
anyother autofocus point and shoot. Not only is it an autofocus camera with
a viewfinder window and no rangefinder, but it's "manual focus" is really
false advertising, in that it simply lets you push buttons back and forth to
line up glowing lights.

Only one of the lenses is faster than f 2.8, which really cripples the
system in terms of available light photography.

And in the G1 the autofocus was really pathetic. Yes, I know, it's greatly
improved with the G2.

It is a terrific P&S system that allows one to do far more than one could
with any other P&S. And if I had enough money to finish filling out my M
system and then some, I'd buy a G2 as a carry camera.

But one doesn't need much in the way of photographic sophistication to use
one - all one has to do it read part of the owner's manual and bang away.
And, yes, if one does know something about photography, one can take some
damn fine photos with a G2.

What kind of crap is this? Obviously someone who knows NOTHING about the
G series contax cameras. They are definately not "point and shoot". They
are worthy rangefinders that require some concept of photography to make
them work properly. The lenses are comparable to Leica lenses in most
situations and the finish and functioning is intuitive to one who knows
photography. They don't even offer "full automated" function-- you have to
set at least the aperature, etc. I have shot many many cameras, both old
and new, and only a few approach the "feel" of an M6, but the G series
cameras are one... Kpeters
