How far were you from the basketball action? If you were courtside and
close, the 135/2.8 DOF at flash apertures may not be deep enough.  I suspect
that, if your exposures were OK with ASA 100 film and flash, you were fairly
close. If not, and you were using a wide aperture, you may have enough
ambient light to cause blur at 1/50 because the flash was not sufficient to
stop the action.  The only way for the 135/2.8  to be used in this fashion
is for conditions to allow the flash to be the ONLY recordable light source.
At courtside, prefocus on the net or the area of interest and use the most
powerful flash and the smallest aperture possible.  Remember, the  Elmira
has a fairly shallow DOFF at f 2.8 even at distances exceeding most flashes.
