It's a bottom-mounted manual winding device that replaces the camera's
bottom plate.  It makes winding and shooting faster because you don't have
to move your shutter hand to wind the film.  Think of it as a manual
motor...

And BTW, the photo on this page that shows the correct way to hold an M2
with RW, appears to show a black-taped M6.  Hans, did you forget to update
the caption when you spiffed up the photos?
