Extremely low living standards (living in boarding houses or apartments of 100 square feet), and/or income supplemented with welfare, which is very widespread in France even among the middle classes. In other words, 75% of your income goes to the government, then you get 5% of that back as welfare. The usual strategy is to try to see how much government aid you can obtain, rather than try to reduce taxes. The problems with this approach have not yet been noticed by the French. Perhaps one day they will see the light, before the rest of the developed world passes them by. Decades of socialism have taken their toll. -- Anthony
