Some reasons might be: A prolonged period of disuse (mechanical shutter, lubricants can dry out) Possible misalignment of the rangefinder (due to age or knocks) Evidence of shutter speed problems (uneven exposures, etc.) Evidence of metering problems :-) Immersion in bovine excrement. Frankly, I'm a little nervous about suggesting these things to you, as you've shown a distressing tendency to obsess over stuff like this :-) Let me say that IMO Leica is right - regular (as in annual) maintenance is not required, especially for the M6, which has less tendency to go out of alignment in normal service than earlier cameras like the M3. I normally just check the shutter speeds every year or two, keep an eye on my pictures to make sure the focus is falling where I put it, and don't do anything unless something screws up or 10 years go by.
