What matters is whether the illumination on the meter is the same as the illumination on the subject. When shooting outdoors, if both you and your subject are in sun or similar shade, an incident meter will give good results no matter how far you are away from your subject. The problems start if you are in shade and your subject is in the sun, or vice versa. Similarly, it's impossible to meter a stage production with an incident meter if you're in the audience. But the key thing is that the distance doesn't count, just the illumination level at the meter and the level at the subject. Paul Chefurka
