They protect your head, can be tied so that they don't blow away, and don't ming getting wet at all. I'll never be in my canoe without one. Thay are, however, a serious fashion faux pas in the city. The only time I have seen one worn in an urban area was by Tilley himself at St. Lawrence market in Toronto (the birthplace of the company).
