Dan, Bud, and Mike,

Thank you for those replies, which told me what I wanted to know.

Is there a way of recognizing the SL with the fresnel on the meter
cell--either in person or, more appropriate to my situation, via mail
order/auction source?

Thanks again............Julian

Julian-
The SL2, I believe, has the 'split' image viewfinder- and with long lenses,
unless you get your eye centered just right, either the top half or the
bottom half of the image goes dark! The SL has a plain screen, and always
seemed reasonably easy to focus without the split image. I can't say for the
SL2, but I have used R3, R4, R6, and R7 cameras, all with the split
viewfinder spot, and I find the 'darkening' disconcerting, actually,
distracting more than anything else. I suppose it is a matter of personal
taste!
I have two SL bodies, and just love them- I use a Celestron 500mm/5,6
Catadiotric lens at times and even with a lens that long, never have a
problem focusing- actually got some good shots of surfers, handheld, last
year!
If you are thinking of getting the SL or SL2, it seems the SL@ commands a
premium price, but you can still get a good SL, preferably one with the
'fresnel' on the metering cell- a later model, that will perform
magnificently for between 300-500 USD depending on condition. The SL2 bodies
seem to go for nearly a 1000 USD at times- I don't know if it is the
collector value or what, but the list seems to think the SL is a better buy-
from what I've seen!
Good luck!
Dan

Does the SL2 have an disadvantage when compared with the SL for use with
long lenses? The SL is often mentioned favorably in this context. Thanks.
