Understand, and quite agree that what you saw with the 'cheap'
lens could easily have been a quality photo. Some great photos
are often made with less than Leica glass. I had a 20mm f2,8
Canon with my EOS1n before coming to Leica. I loved that lens. It
was not even thought to be one of Canon's better W.A. efforts,
but it done good for me. That's why I'm getting real close to
ordering the 15mm Heliar. It wont be an everyday lens, but a
really wide rectilinear is great fun.
BTW, I'm almost convinced that strong technician credentials can
often get in the way of a PJ. The PJ's eye, reflexes, intuition and
being in absolute control of his camera by virtue of his absolute
knowledge of that camera and its supporting devices are, IMO,
more important than technical prowess. It's nearly axiomatic,
though, that a good PJ will have *enough* technical savvy to do
his job.
Now, if you're spreading out anything from a Leica R through LF
gear to do scenics, macro, catalog or fashion, the game changes.
