Clearly that particular region is not an area I know well and I shouldn't have been so sweeping in my comments, especially about a diverse country that wasn't unified prior to Bismarck. I also didn't know about the Armistice day coincidence, so my apologies to Horst about that, and my thanks to Keith for the correction. The above, however, is from the Universiaet Mainz site, and shows the date of Rosemontag and Fastnachtsdienstag in Mainz this year. My recollection is that most of the Fasching fests in the areas in which I lived, (Rheinland Pfalz and Hessen) were at about the same time. There are, of course, fests scattered around throughout the year in different places, but they mostly don't involve the carnival-like costumes which is why if you want to take pictures I still think that Mainz is worth a trip - but wrap up warm or drink a lot of insulating beer or Gluhwein, it's chilly In February. And yes, I did take pictures with my Leica. Regards, Simon Stevens Camera Craftsman (703) 548-7548 http://www.camera-craftsman.com
