I do have a long term concern with digital- that of longevity. I have a box
full of wire recordings in my garage. Can anyone "convert" them? Tried
reading an 8" floppy lately?

Yes, I know that digital storage can be converted to new media when storage
devices change. The question is "Will they be converted"? I suspect than
many fine images will be lost.>>

I see what you mean. In many cases it will happen just out of
procrastination, until one waits too long and then it's a big deal to change
mediums. But at the same time I'm not sure I understand what you are
referring to as the alternative to, specifically digital images. Obviously
not the print... My slides I don't worry about as much. But the
negatives - I may be misunderstanding you here - but I've started archiving
some to cd-rom (and then I can burn them into a whole lot). There is
nothing worse than having a negative that is used often! (well - not
really) But I'd like to preserve them - dig a whole or something. I think
that digital is a tough thing for many photographers - in the sense that it
may conflict, or may not, with their definition of photography and not leave
much room for the traditional 'picture' to be respected, etc. This doesn't
imply that anybody has to separate the two - not at all, but its something
that certainly comes to issue at times. I think the real benefit that is
upon us is that along with this there is at the same time 'better' ways to
preserve. This will spread into various techniques that will satisfy more
situations. Where does this go into undesirables? Perhaps it has something
to do with the ability to determine HOW the image was created. This too, I
would think, will advance simultaneously with the ability to actually create
the images by increasingly numerous methods.
