Robert,

You are absolutely correct that Leica USA keeps track of these serial 
numbers.  Unfortunately, the practice of engraving the camera chassis with 
the serial number went out with the M3 and IIIg.  The only serial number 
engraved on an M6 is the one on the hot shoe, and if it has been removed it 
can't be for an honest reason.  I would certainly speak to the dealer you 
bought the camera from and ask why this camera has no serial number.
