>>Perhaps it is difficult for us to accept the fact that there is (the
15mm), and probably will be other non-Leica lenses for our M's that perform,
for all real world practical purposes, as well as Leica, for a fraction of
the cost.<<

Dr. Black Tape would like to nominate the comment above for the award in
"Most Astute LUG Comment of The Year - Or At Least The Last 24 Hours"
category of the LUGIES.

The important question is not who made the lens and did they make it in
Canada, Germany, or Korea, but rather, "does the lens give you the images
you want and need under the circumstances in which you use it?"

If you are always blowing everything up to 16x20 and beyond, if you are
shooting chromes for massive enlargement on screen or paper, then added
investment in all Leica glass is probably a good one for you.

On the other hand, if your final demands are less size intensive, there are
undoubtedly good uses for less expensive "alternative" glass.

Dr. Black Tape wonders, for instance, how much sense it would make to invest
$10000 in the Leica equivalent of the $500-700 Heliar, when the Heliar
produces acceptable results the few times you "need" it.

FYI - Dr. Black Tape recently used a Serenar 35 2.8, in addition to his
Summilux 35 ASPH, for a number of shots taken over the course of a three-day
job. Going over the results - which are NOT blown up much past 8x10, Dr.
Black Tape can't tell which are Serenar shots and which are Summiulx ASAP.
Will there be circumstances in which flare will tell the difference? Of
course. But does the $200 Serenar perform adequately under non-optically
stressed circumstances? It sure does.
