Have you considered using a softar-type filter on the newer lens for 
portraiture?  It always seemed to make more sense to me to have a sharp lens 
and soften it temporarily rather than a lens that's never sharp.  Then again, 
portraiture consitutes only a minuscule part of my photography and one I've 
never been very adept at.
