Dear Sam:

Dr. Black Tape is sorry to say that you are definitely missing something:

Hold your index finger straight up. Place a two-inch long rubber band around
your finger, so that it forms a perpendicular with the finger. This is how
you use the rubber band with the Softie - the band rides between the Softie
and the shutter release button cup, preventing accidental depression of the
shutter release.

But don't forget, the rubber band has to be black for this to work..:-)

<<The only drawback to the softie is that, because it sticks up from the top
of the body, it is easilly tripped in the camera bag or by the users
clothing. Thus the rubber band. When looped around the softie it keeps the
shutter being accidentally tripped..>>

I must be missing something, but wouldn't putting a rubber band around a
cocked shutter trip it? And if it's not cocked, why do you need a rubber
band?
