Subject: [Leica] email safety reminder

A reminder about safe and sensible email practices.

Computer viruses are malicious programs that somehow get to your computer.
The only way that they can "infect" your computer is if somebody, somehow,
tricks you into running the program. Normally on a computer the way you RUN
something is to double-click on it. Just looking at an icon on your screen
is not the same as running the program attached to it.

If you get an email message from somebody that contains an attachment, do
not doubleclick on that attachment until you are sure of what it is and who
sent it to you. If you don't doubleclick on the attachment you will be safe
from virus things that arrive in email.

It is always a good idea to get a program like Norton Anti Virus or McAfee
or Symantec Anti Virus. They can help you remember. But if you never
double-click on something until you are certain of what it is and who sent
it to you, then you will be safe from computer viruses.

Note that the vast majority of computer viruses are PC-only and do not
disturb Macs. So if you use a Mac you can feel safer, but you can't feel
completely safe unless you remember the rule about not doubleclicking on
things until you are sure of what they are.
