Mary,

you probably un-intentionally pressed the rewind button on the bottom of
the camera. When it is pressed, one can cock the shutter without advancing
the film. One other thing to watch for is the self timer lever (on front
right side when you hold it). It is too easy to engage with no intention,
and next thing you see is the camera firing all by itself about 10 seconds
later (you don't need to press the shutter release).
