The lens appears to focus correctly, though I haven't done enough wide open
shooting in good light and with fast shutter speeds to be sure that any
misalignment isn't being covered by DOF.

I'm inclined just to loosen the ring on which the distance scale is engraved
and re-set it so that it agrees with the actual focused distance.

The lens has obviously been carelessly re-assembled before I got hold of it
(privately, not from a dealer). I was just interested whether anybody had an
idea of how likely (or possible) it was that the focus cam of the lens (that
drives the rangefinder in the camera) could also have been wrongly aligned
when the lens was taken apart and re-assembled. If it is the case that the
brass barrel, the end of which is the focus cam, can ONLY have the correct
relationship with the glass, then I'll stop worrying about it. But if, as
with the outer lens barrel rings for aperture setting and the distance
scale, this inner brass barrel can rotate when loose into an incorrect
position then I suppose I am going to have to get the lens overhauled just
in case.

Simon.
