the things they mentioned and I got some improvements for scanning slides.

Photosmart, which will scan slides, negatives and prints up to 5x7, at a

which by now must be well below $500 in the U.S.

With all due respect to Nathan - The HP Photosmart is terrific for scanning
negatives, either color or b&w, particularly when used with the Vuesmart
software - which you can buy on the web for $40. HOWEVER, I have been really
disappointed with the quality of slide scans.
But if you primarilly want to scan negatives and an occassional small print,
definitely go for it...It's about $399 or less in the U.S. and worth the
money.
