According to the person I talked to (the Blackstar photographer at the Maine workshop - it's late my brain is shutting down after a particularly hard day at work) the guy who invented the K Mini lab doesn't work for Kodak. He just figured out how to create a small machine that can do K-14. It's computer controlled and is inexpensive enough to go into any reasonable sized lab that's interested. So I think there is hope, if Kodak will push it a bit. Update the emulsion, and they could have an edge on Fuji again.
