In my view, no photographer this century has managed to do what Robert Frank
did in 1953-55 on that trip through the US with his Leica M and 600 rolls of
Plus-X in changing the iconography of American photography. Add to that the
irresistable images he made in Peru, all over Europe, and especially Mabou,
Nova Scotia, and he gets my vote.

I got to see his "Moving Out" exhibition several years ago that started at
the Smithsonian and went around the world. What struck me was how he has
managed to keep reinventing himself so interestingly. His output falls into
distinct periods that are very different from each other, and each
compelling and gutsy. On a personal level, I also admire his ruthless
honesty, his shunning of the limelight and his courage in rejecting the
almighty dollar.
