Several reasons. And I'm not down on it, I just don't like it as much as 
available light.

1: Bounce flash pictures all look alike. Shadows fall down behind the 
subject, going away from the subject. If the subject is near a wall, 
there's the shadow. The light is even, and boring. I like side-light and 
backlight. Sometimes it's the only way to get the picture you need. I use 
it for the occasional society page picture session when our editor is off 
or on vacation.

2: It draws attention to the photographer. Makes the subject that much more 
aware of the photographic process.

3: Black walls. :-)

In the studio, I much prefer using umbrellas and soft boxes. More 
controllable, and doesn't flood the room with a flat, uninteresting light.
