The recommendation when processing E6 is to remove the film from the plastic reels before the "final rinse" step. I don't and as a result, me reels are very discoloured and do bind a little. I was putting them in a household bleech solution to clean but was told this would make the plastic brittle. They suggested Lysol toilet bowl cleaner since their cleaner doesn't seem to be available in Canada.
