Duane,

Because if you don't control the highlights with slide film, you get
unusable pictures. The shadows can go down quite a ways and you can pull
detail out of it with masking or Photoshop. You can't restore detail.

Believe it, this is a basic principle of shooting slide film since Mannes
and Godowski (sp?) played music to time the Kodachrome process.
