A good Photoshop technician can do it very easily. From one image. Not even
two. Especially for those decisive moments that won't wait for two exposers
to take place before becoming non-decisive. :-)  But two exposures is good
when you have a chance.

They way to do it with one image is to scan it twice. Once with highlights
and once with shadows emphasized. With negative film, you can control an
amazing range of contrast. There are lots of ways to tame contrast.
