Jim, 

Not quite true for even the R4, E, 5. They still use the battery in the
body to charge some capacitor for the shutter release button. If that
battery is dead, you have to hold the button down for a few seconds to
charge up the capacitor, then it will take the picture. A real pain in cold
weather when the body battery gets cold and then you hit the button at a
critical time and nothing happens for a second or two.
