They still use the battery in the body to charge some capacitor for the shutter release button. If that battery is dead, you have to hold the button down for a few seconds to charge up the capacitor, then it will take the picture. A real pain in cold weather when the body battery gets cold and then you hit the button at a critical time and nothing happens for a second or two.
