There is a good article on Digital Photography by Michael Reichmann (with
whom I had the pleasure to meet when he visited Singapore some years back)
in the Nov/Dec98 issue of Photo Technique.  I found reading it very
rewarding and has snippets of information on various scanners and their
"gamma" rating.
