I think one's perspective would be influenced by one's own age.   Nikon
(other than the lenses, which the PJ's perferred to Leitz lenses for LTM
bodies in the '50's) didn't really come to mass prominence until the
mid-60's and the heightening of the Vietnam war.  Even in those days, it
was rare to see anyone other than a pro carrying a Nikon or even a
Nikkormat.  The bodies and lenses were significantly more expensive (in
the way Leica R is now more expensive than Nikon) than Pentax, Canon,
Minolta, Miranda, Olympus/Pen, Mamyia/Sekor, Petri and even slightly more
than Topcon. It wasn't until the 70's with the FM/FE/FG etc. when Nikon
traded on their name and made a major inroad into the consummer market,
that most of those other marques went kaput and suddenly Nikon was around
everyone's neck.  Within a decade, though, Canon had usurped the
consummer market.
