I have seen The strap can be used separately, or threaded through a loop sewn inside the soft case. I cut the loop off my case because I didn't want the case attached to the camera and it got in the way when zipping up. The strap construction and attachment is exactly the same as one end of the normal strap. When I sold my collapsible elmar I traded the case with the strap, but I am now thinking I will try to get a strap on its own. It worked well for me, but I share your concern about the long term effect of all load going through one lug. Mike
