The R system is the only modern manual-focus SLR (aside from Contax SLR's).
So in effect, little or no competition (again, not the largest niche in the
world, but...). I really don't think Leica is competing with Canon or Nikon.

Don't overlook Nikon's F3 and FM2, both current manual-focus models. The R8
offers better much flash control and more versatile metering, but the
Nikons offer motor drives, a more versatile finder system (F3) and are to
some hands (like mine) far more comfortable to use.

Although looking over Leica's latest financial report, which shows R sales
falling by 37% compared to the same six months last year, Leica probably
wishes the system had no competition.
