Subject: [Leica] RE: Ken's Filtering the 90/2.8

Ken, you just proved what Leica has always said. And I've been attempting
to pass on to the LUG folks.

The 90 Elmarit-M is one of Leica's best flare inhibiting lenses. This is a
result of the Leica coating on the front element of the Elmarit. By putting
a filter (any filter) in front of the Leica lens coating will essentially
render the Leica lens coating useless. It's now buried behind two air-glass
surfaces and an inferior filter coating. Filter coatings don't approach the
effectiveness of Leica lens coatings. Filters are wonderful and useful
accessories. But, in the words of Leica optical engineers, only put one on
your lens if it is pointing *away* from direct light and high contrast.
Perhaps the Leica optical engineers know what they are talking about.

Ken just proved that they do.
