Subject: Re: [Leica] Collectors or users driving the used M market???

I think we should not fail to remember that whatever the nature of the
force or forces driving up the price of used M's, whilst it works against
us at the time of purchase it works *for* us at the time of sale.
Furthermore were it not for the high prices of used Leica, I venture to
say that a portion of sales of new Leica would be lost as well...partly
due to an increase in savings by buying used and partly because of the
increased depreciation potential of new equipment. That would eventually
cause a rebound effect whereby the used prices would again go up...but in
addition, the loss of new sales might just be the death knell for Leica.
So I am tempering my disdain for the position of the used market.

BTW, there is also another variety of collector into which category I
place myself: the user who elects not to always sell or trade-up to new
acquisitions. Part of this is due to the fact that the lack of
depreciation over time renders us in no hurry to dump discontinued
equipment.

Regards,
Nigel
