Subject: Re: [Leica] Tripods and flashes and film...Oh My!

I don't think anyone on the LUG actually believes it is "wrong" in the
moral or technical sense to plant a Leica on a tripod or a flash on a
Leica. There are some images which can only be got with aritificial
lighting, even with a Leica, and it is certainly a fact that some form of
mechanical camera support, when feasible, always improves image sharpness
if even to a minute degree. An advantage to the Leica is that tripods
and flash are *options* with many types of shots where they would be
necessities with some other camera types which do not have the level of
high-quality fast lenses and vibration-nil bodies as Leica do. Some
photographers consider the Leica a special-purpose tool and only use it
with ambient light and handheld. Others, such as myself, consider it
multi-purpose to the point of pushing the Leica to the edge of its
limitations and sometimes beyond. To me the SLR is a specialist camera,
for use with long, fast AF lenses, for sports and wildlife. I rarely
use the Leica for candid portraiture in low light. Most of my indoor
shots are such that I need maximum DOF which means a tripod or flash or
both. I do also use the Leica frequently for landscape scenics, even to
the point of attaching graduated ND filters if necessary, and a tripod
(albeit a thankfully lightweight Gitzo 026) is de rigeur for me. To each
his own. I daresay Leica would not have placed a tripod bush nor a flash
contact if they intended these never to be used.

Nigel
