You are right to note the the speed dial was set to something other than "B", aware that setting the control to "B" is the equivalent of turning off the electronic circuit.Your battery got old and died. (Assuming and old battery. If it was a new battery, and you know it was a good, new battery, and it died prematurely, consider the possibility of a short.)
