Seems that my R8 is indeed broken.  I have tried putting back the original
handgrip (not using the winder).  It just seems to fall a sleep and does not
automatically wind to 1st film.  Tried to use manual winding.  It works but
then the shutter does not. : (

Very embarassing.  Will take it to service center to fix.

Just curious, some fellow member said that Leica knows about this problem.
If this is true, how can they not recall their cameras., at least for the
unsold cameras still in the store!?  Nothing is more frustrating than paying
high price for a camera which goes zippo faster than a
point-to-shoot........  If not for the nice glasses they have, I would have
switched to ...... long long time ago.
