Therefore, only the aperture that the lens was set to needed to be communicated to the camera body. This required one cam. When the SL (and SL/2) came along, they provided TTL metering at full aperture. This required a second cam to let the camera know the maximum aperture of the lens being used. When the R3 came along, it was based on a different system (Minolta?). This added the third cam. I own both the SL and SL/2 and couldn't imagine giving them up.
