I noted the price of a new enlarger timer and decided to try Ansel Adams' trick of using a metronome set to 60 and counting the beats. It has been a great success, and as I alrady had a metronome, it cost nothing. For timing film I use a $6.00 digital kitchen timer that my wife had. It also works just fine. Lights. I don't know about others, but I love my Thomas safelight. It can be too bright for my preferences and still not fog paper. It's less tiring working in an adequately lit darkroom, and I think you make fewer mistakes. Enjoy your dark room. I love the time I spend there. Remember, pictures are taken with a camera, but they are made in the darkroom.
