There are various ways of controlling contrast.  The most effective is to
make a mask of some sort that will hold back lighter areas of the slide and
reduce the contrast.  I use something called Minit Mask which is a piece of
glass that darkens with exposure to light.  You put the slide on the glass
and flash it a few times which creates a mask. After exposure the glass is
cleared with hot water or hair dryer and is ready to use again.  It's
pretty easy.

Different films will require different filters in the enlarging head.  The
Ilfochrome paper comes with suggested filters for different films, but it
is a process of trial and error.

Yes, you definately need a color head.  You will be dialing in lots of
different filter combinations.  Temperature control is still critical.  If
you plan on doing a lot of Ilfochromes, you should look into the Ilford
CAP-40 processor.  It's a wonderful machine.
