I once had to ,rather forcefully too, stop a security guard from poking his
finger at the shuttercurtain of a M4-P. He was convinced that the lack of a
mirror hid something malevolent. I have also had to trigger the shutter and
make the camera issue the appropriate noises before they let me through.( Not
that easy with a Leica M). Irritating as it can be and sometimes it takes a
lot of time, I rather have them check me and everybody else out, than have the
airport security go sloppy.
In a lot of travels over the years, i have only had film damaged twice. Once
coming out of Auckland,NZ they managed to fry some Tri-X ( interesting pattern
of sprockets along the edge of the film) and once in Istanbul they fogged some
H.S. Ektachrome that had been left in a checked in case. Now I carry all my
film in clear plastic bags ,no plastic cans or boxes and sometimes they will
let me through without zapping it. But all in all, I rather take a chance ,
having my film zapped and getting there in one piece, than somebody getting
something on board that should not be there!
