Donal,

Makes me feel good to hear you say this as this is how I have always worked.  
I know many "pro" shooters and most of the assistants I have hired who laugh 
at the way I work with my little 283's and dyna lite jack rabbits, but for location 
stuff this works really well.  One thing I do often is to use 1 light to throw 
random light over the entire scene then use a TTL flash for directed light from 
the camera and it looks like I worked hard to light a scene.

I think it has a lot to do with how you "see" light and how you learned to control 
it. I never had access to the big stuff till recently so I had to learn to get by on 
my wits and little equipment.  Of course as you say once you learn to light the 
whole thing it is hard to get back in the habit of going small.
