Harrison,

It is NOT a joke! There are EU standards for all sorts of things,
including the shape of cucumbers, size of bananas etc. This sort of
micro-management by Brussels of all sorts of things is what turns people
in some countries (like Denmark or the UK) off the whole Euro project.
