No Eric, the tray comes with the backpack, in fact it is the lower part 
of it. I put the Apo-Vario-Elmarit 70-180 horizontally in it, while the 
other lenses stay vertically in the rest of the backpack. You can slide 
out the tray at any moment without having to remove all other gear. You 
just open the hatch, and the drawer just slides out when you pull at it 
(of course it is attached with a safety loop, so you can't not unwantedly 
drop it). Very convenient.
