It stands for 'Significant Other'. The English language is sadly lacking
for words that describe the varying natures of relationships. If one is not
married, 'boyfriend/girlfriend' sound woefuly immature.

Plus, 'S.O', allows for other permutations:

1. Husband and Wife
2. Man and woman in a loving relationship, that happen not to be married.
3. Homosexuals in a long-term relationship can use S.O. without using a
gender-specific term. A man or woman who is gay can refer to his/her 'S.O',
and it can be taken by the listener to be whatever...
