While I like the results of using Leica lenses better than I like the
results of using other manufacturers' lenses, I find them different
enough from one another that I don't think I can say that overall there
is a particular Leica quality I seek in using them.

Instead, I enjoy a particular experience: I like the way these objects
are made, so that it makes me happy to use them. I also like to make
photographs, in a different way altogether -- I would enjoy making
photographs whether or not I used Leicas. But the combination of using
Leicas and making photographs gives me a great deal of pleasure. Using
an SL or an M2 or an R6 isn't for me so much an experience of the camera
disappearing as it is one of knowing the camera very well and being able
to rely on it, whereas using other equipment is often a fiddly and
frustrating experience.

I don't seek ultimate sharpness when I photograph. I used to care more
about this, and there are many times still when I want a photograph to
be sharp and it makes me happy that my Leica equipment is mostly up to
the challenge, but I sometimes use the equipment under circumstances
where I know I won't get sharp photos -- I use an old Summarit wide open
on my M2, or I handhold a long lens at a low shutter speed, whatever.
Usually a striking image is still striking for me even if it isn't
tremendously sharp.

Anyway, I don't really feel badly about digital photography replacing
film. When digital photography progresses to the point where 35mm film
is inconvenient, I expect to buy or build digital backs for my
mechanical Leicas. I'll still be happy using them.
