That used to be my opinion, too, until I discovered I was working to hard
to load the M6. If I tried to make sure visually that it was winding on the
takeup spool, it always seemed to be a hassle with the camera back open.
Finally, I saw some instructions that said to just close it up when you had
placed the film leader between two of the spokes on the takeup spool (like
in the image at the camera base). I tried that. It's worked every time -
couldn't be simpler. 

I still always check that the rewind knob is turning on a new roll. But my
being too careful before was defeating the purpose of the camera back and
baseplate being in position to guide the film. Works like a charm when you
follow the directions!
